Meet Dr. Poulsen

Our friendly staff is committed to clinically superior dental care delivered with integrity and a gentle touch. The majority of our staff has been at Boulder Family Dental Center for over 20 years. We are family. Dr. Ken Poulsen grew up in New Jersey and Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry. Before starting dental school, he worked for 2 years as a research assistant in the Department of Biochemistry at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He then attended Marquette University School of Dentistry, receiving his DDS Degree in 1985.

Dr. Poulsen and his wife, Jan, moved to Boulder in 1986. Dr. Poulsen very strongly believes in giving back to the community he loves. He is an active member of the Boulder Luncheon Optimist Club, Colorado Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and Boulder Valley Schools Adopt a Smile program. Dr. Poulsen is also committed to continuing education and keeping up with the latest advancements in dental care. He attends continuing education courses and seminars regularly and is a member of the Colorado Prosthodontic Society, American Dental Association, Colorado Dental Association, and Boulder County Dental Society.

Outside of the office, Dr. Poulsen, his wife, daughter, and son enjoy all of the activities Colorado has to offer, ranging from school sports, to hiking, bicycling, camping, rafting, skiing, and fly fishing. He and his family are also passionate about their 21-foot sailboat on Carter Lake, which they enjoy all summer long and are able to occasionally escape for a sailing vacation on the ocean. The first and most important step in my treatment plan is to listen. Only after I get to know you – both as a patient with a specific medical history and condition, and as a person with unique needs, questions, aspirations, and perhaps fears – can I determine how to treat you as an individual with precisely the care you need and the attention you deserve. When it comes to treatment, I am "clinically conservative." I want all of my patients to have comfortable, healthy teeth and gums for their entire lives. From my experience, that does not mean lots of treatment for the sake of treatment. I will always strive to find the least invasive solutions possible to address your medical needs. And if you require specialty treatment, I will refer you to a specialist outside my office so that you receive the best possible care for your specific condition. At the end of the day, after I've seen my last patient, I ask myself: "Did I do the right thing for each and every patient today?" That is my guiding principle, my compass for the dentistry I practice and the medical professional I strive to be.
