Frequently Asked Questions

Our dental practice has been part of the Boulder community for over 30 years and we receive many questions from patients. Below are  a few of the most frequently asked questions.

How safe are X-rays?

There is very little risk with dental X-rays. We take all necessary precautions and minimize the amount of radiation to which patients are exposed. Lead aprons and high- speed film are used to ensure safety and limit exposure to radiation.

How can parents help prevent tooth decay?

Parents should take their children to the dentist every six months. We always recommend a specific program of flossing, brushing, and other treatments for parents to teach their children. These at home practices, in addition to regular dental visits and a proper diet, will help provide a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Are you taking new patients?

YES. Our patients often refer their friends and family. In fact, the majority of our new patients come to us in that way. We are proud of the confidence our loyal patients have placed in us.

What happens at my first visit?

In order to treat every patient as a unique individual with unique dental needs, it is important to comprehensively assess their oral health. We look at muscles and joints that open and close the mouth and perform an oral cancer screening. We also examine your teeth, your gums, and the bone that hold the teeth (the periodontium). We then take photos and x-rays. All of this information helps us develop a treatment plan that is right for you.

How can I make my teeth whiter?

There are several methods to make teeth whiter and it is important to understand that what works well for one patient may not be the best option for another. While some in- office whitening techniques can get you immediate results, they tend to be unnecessarily expensive and short-lived compared to certain take-home whitening systems. Veneers are an option for more extreme cases but are not often necessary. If you are interested in improving the appearance of your smile, please schedule a consultation with us to discuss your best options.

What kind of toothpaste is best?

The most important part of brushing your teeth is the technique used and regular brushing and flossing. Toothpaste is important in that it supplies fluoride and tartar control. Be careful of the whitening brands because some are abrasive and they can remove enamel from your teeth.

Electric toothbrushes?

Ever hear the proverb: the best toothbrush is the one you use regularly? It's true. We believe that electric toothbrushes, when used regularly, remove more plaque and tarter than a manual toothbrush. There are many models on the market that work well. If you have a question about a specific brand, please ask us.

What do you do for nervous and anxious patients?

We realize that even though dental care has come a long way in terms of patient comfort, there are still those with concerns and fears. Dental care should not be an anxiety-ridden experience. We are experts at working with anxious patients and use several techniques to help you relax and feel at ease. We do not practice sedation dentistry.
